Research within the Department of Law

In the Law Department, faculty are involved in cutting edge research, the result of which is not only an improved body of research in their fields, but improved teaching as well that reflects contemporary thought and analysis.

Dr. Tim Potier has published one book in the area of protection of minority rights and is working on a second.  He has also published a number of articles and conference papers.  Dr. Nicos Trimikliniotis has recently received a grant from the European Union under the 5th Framework.  He has been active in both participating and organizing conference proceedings on racism and ethnicity, and has published a number of articles as well.  Dr. Martha Sampson has published articles and given presentations on international child abduction and is currently working on a book on Cyprus tort law, while Ms. Sofia Michaelides has achieved recognition in Cyprus and Greece for her work on liability in airline crashes and incidents.  Ms. Michaelides and Mr. Peter Pafitis are also collaborating on a book concerning Cyprus contract law.  Both of the aforementioned books are expected to fill a vacuum in the local market of academic quality books on Cyprus law.  Ms. Stephanie Laulhe has published many articles and notes on international banking law and tax law and recently organized a conference on tax law.

Professional Consulting

Some faculty members are involved in consultancy, an activity that further strengthens their knowledge and interaction with practice reality, thereby allowing for the enhancement of their teaching.  For example, Dr. Martha Sampson regularly consults with the Law Office of Christofides, Sampson & Co., primarily on cases of international child abduction, but also on local cases in tort, contract, and family law; and Ms. Sofia Michaelides has been consulted on several occasions by professionals in the aviation industry on issues of airline and pilot liability.  Mr. Peter Pafitis spent nearly 20 years before coming to Cyprus as a legal advisor to trading companies in the Gulf area and South Africa, and continues to act as a consultant to offshore companies in Cyprus on the legal aspects of business locally and internationally.
